What you need to know about Vaughan’s Smoking By-law

Bylaws are put into place in order to ensure that everyone who lives, works, or plays in Vaughan is able to thrive in an environment that is both secure and well-organised. Vaughan’s Smoking By-law specifically governs where and how smoking is permitted in the city, aiming to protect the health, safety, and wellness of residents and visitors alike.

This contains the Smoking By-law 074-2019 of the City of Vaughan, which outlaws the smoking of tobacco, cannabis, electronic cigarettes, and other drugs that are comparable. The purpose of this is to safeguard the health, safety, and wellness of both locals and tourists.

According to the bylaw, smoking something like an electronic cigarette or electronic vaporiser, a cigar, a cigarette, or a pipe that contains tobacco is only permitted in very particular public spaces that are located outside, and it is not permitted in public areas that are enclosed.   You are only allowed to smoke cannabis in an open outdoor place if you are legally entitled to possess it for personal medical use or if you are in compliance with a court order.

Any and all forms of smoking are strictly forbidden

  • In a park, unless in a designated area.
  • In or at a City-owned facility, unless in an outdoor designated area.
  • Within 20 metres of any wading pool, splashpad, skating rink, skate park, sports field, playground, tennis court or basketball court, including any spectator areas.
  • Within 20 metres of any school (public or private).
  • Within nine metres of the public entrance or any openable window of any childcare centre or within 20 metres of any playground under the care and control of any childcare centre.

Any individual who is discovered to be in breach of the smoking bylaw may be subject to a fine

  • Between $100 and $5,000 for a first offence.
  • Between $250 and $10,000 for a subsequent conviction.
  • Between $100 and $10,000 for each offence if convicted for multiple offences.
  • In accordance with the City’s Littering and Dumping By-law 103-2020, the act of dispersing smoking materials, such as cigarette butts, on the ground is considered to be littering and carries a minimum penalty of $500.

Fire is another risk that is associated with smoking. Be certain that you, if you are a smoker

Each cigarette or cigar must be fully extinguished before placing it in an ashtray designed to prevent tipping or fire.

The contents of ashtrays should never be poured into garbage cans since doing so could start a fire. Allow the ashtray to arrive at room temperature after adding a single drop of water.

Never  flick the butts out of the window of your automobile or onto the ground. If you are smoking in a building that is located on a high-rise, you should make sure to put out all of your cigarette or cigar butts in a secure ashtray. This will prevent them from flying away or falling into balconies underneath.

Cigarettes should never be extinguished near potted plants because the soil’s fertilizer can catch fire. Potted plants should be in clay pots and watered regularly to help prevent potential fires.

Keep your smoke away from anything that could catch fire.
