Beyond the familiar wax and shatter sits a product that looks a little like marmalade — golden, glossy, and flecked with crystal formations. That’s cannabis sauce, and once you understand what’s actually going on inside that small glass jar, it’s easy to see why it has built such a loyal following among Canadian concentrate enthusiasts. Cannabis sauce — also widely referred to as THC sauce — is a premium cannabis concentrate made up of two distinct but combined components: THCA crystalline structures and a viscous, terpene-saturated liquid. The “crystals” you see suspended in the product are high-cannabinoid full-spectrum extract (HCFSE), which are dense formations of THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, the raw, non-psychoactive precursor to THC). The surrounding syrupy liquid is called high-terpene full-spectrum extract (HTFSE). It contains the strain’s full range of aromatic compounds.

When heated through dabbing or vaporization, THCA converts into active THC through decarboxylation. At the same time, the terpene layer releases its full aroma. The result is a hit that is both extremely potent and exceptionally flavourful. Cannabis sauce resembles fruit jam or marmalade. How Is THC Sauce Made?

Making cannabis sauce starts with flash-freezing freshly harvested flower.  This means it is done immediately at harvest, and skips the traditional drying and curing process entirely. Research confirms that monoterpenes, the most volatile and aromatic compounds in cannabis, can degrade by more than 50% within the first week of conventional drying alone. Hence, freezing locks them in.

In the next step, hydrocarbon solvents, usually butane or propane, extract cannabinoids and terpenes from the frozen plant material. The extraction takes place in a closed-loop system. In the next step, the crude extract receives only a light, low-temperature purge before being sealed in jars and left undisturbed for days to weeks. This is what separates sauce from other solvent-based extracts as they receive an aggressive vacuum purge compared to the low-temperature purge sauce receives. During the resting period, THCA naturally crystallizes. The terpene-rich liquid separates around the crystals. This process is known as diamond mining. Next, producers package the product with both layers intact, either combined or in their naturally separated state.
